Blue-headed Pionus
Pionus menstruus
Size: about 11" long
Color: Overall body is green. Beautiful blue head. Varying amounts of pink on throat and neck. All pionus have red undertail feathers. They have a striking, iridescent quality to their coloring that doesn't show up in pictures.
Origin: Central America to Northern South America, and parts of the Caribbean
Personality: Mellow, playful, loving. Their relatively calm and quiet nature makes them a great bird for the "beginner" or an apartment dweller.
Talking ability: not great, but my males say a few phrases that I understand.
Cage requirements: minimum 24"x24"x32" high
Food requirements: Pionus tend to get fat if they don't get enough exercise. They love veggies. They also love fruit and nuts, but watch the fat content. Never feed them a purely seed diet, or they'll get fat. Dried fruit is a good treat, too.
Health notes: Pionus make wheezing sounds when they are upset or overly excited. Give them a few minutes to calm down befoe calling the vet. Don't let them get fat.
